From Contact to Client: The Email Marketing Process

Email marketing is a crucial and understandably difficult process in developing an audience for a website. While the benefits of a strong email campaign might be great, the potential pitfalls of a poorly executed program are just as significant. A well-developed campaign balances its aggression and scope with a respect for client privacy, sends a strong message, and constantly seeks to break into new publics to build an audience. Before going out of your way to contract an email marketing service on the eve of the launch of your new website, consider what it takes to launch a successful campaign and decide for yourself whether or not you can take care of your email marketing in-house, without the additional cost of an external email marketing service.

List Building

The first and most important step to email marketing is selecting an intended audience. A successful campaign must be focused at relevant publics. Launching a campaign with no intended public is like NASA launching a space shuttle with no destination; it's a vastly inefficient and wasteful proposition and it's not going to end well. List building is a first step towards marketing to an audience. List building involves accruing email addresses of individuals pertaining to parties or groups that you think might have a stake in the type of business that you do. By researching and taking into consideration factors that might cause people to take interest in your business, the time you spend list building will result in a final product of a strong potential client base.

Creating Email Campaigns

Once you've specified an audience and are prepared to begin your campaign, it's necessary to take time to craft the message that you intend to send. Email marketing suffers from a stigma of being impersonal and invasive, so it's up to you to find a way to be creative and fresh in the way that you package your business and your message. Creativity can often be difficult in email marketing especially because of the fact that many email clients initially block images embedded in emails especially in emails sent to large numbers of people, but don't let that be a hurdle. Craft your message with a balance of visual and verbal appeal and look to convey an open and approachable tone in your emails. Encourage communication and encourage feedback; an engaged customer is often the best kind.

Autoresponder Software

Maintaining an approachable message will likely result in feedback, so it's important to be prepared to respond. Autoresponder software is a common solution but one with significant pitfalls. The first potential problem with autoresponder software is its susceptibility to spam filters. Automatically generated messages, if sent from an outdated or inadequate autoresponder, will generally be redirected straight to the trash bin of your potential client's inbox. Make sure that your autoresponder software, if you choose to invest in any, is up to current standards. An autoresponder should also provide a method of getting in touch with you or your business, either by providing a phone number, email address, or a link to a contact form on your business' website to allow clients with real questions to have those queries addressed.

Optin... Dont SPAM!

Over the course of an email campaign, you will no doubt encounter many people who simply aren't interested in the services or products that your business provides. A barrage of emails to people who aren't interested in your business might come across as invasive, so it's almost always best to focus on clients who do show an active interest in the things that your business does. That is precisely the benefit of an optin program. Optin programs allow interested parties to subscribe to updates and emails from your companies in order to stay in the loop on products and services. An optin list is a great way to concentrate your most valuable potential clients.

Be a Success!

Email campaigns are time consuming and challenging. They require dedication, consistency and a judicious approach in order to be effective. If you think that you have the time and resources to dedicate to conducting a campaign of your own, by using these basics you could launch a program just as effective as you could expect from an email marketing service at a significantly reduced cost.
